Stick Buying Guide
Choosing the right hockey stick can make a big difference to a player's confidence, comfort, and performance on the pitch. With so many options available, it is important to consider three key factors: length, bow, and composition.
The correct combination will depend on the player's age, height, experience level, and style of play. Whether you are buying a first stick for a beginner or upgrading to a performance model, understanding these features will help you find a stick that feels right and supports skill development.
Stick Length
Choosing the correct stick length is one of the most important factors when buying a hockey stick. A stick that is the right size will improve control, passing, shooting, and overall comfort.
While age can be a useful guide, a player's height is the best indicator. As a general rule for players below 5'3", the top of the stick should reach between the player's hip bone and belly button when standing upright.
Stick Bows
The bow refers to the slight curve along the length of a hockey stick, which affects how the stick performs during different skills. The position and depth of this curve influence ball control, passing, shooting, lifting, and aerial skills.
A standard or mid bow provides a more balanced feel, offering excellent control and consistency for general play, making it a great choice for beginners and all-round players. Low and extra low bows place the curve closer to the head of the stick, helping players generate more lift and control when performing advanced skills such as 3D dribbling, aerials, and drag flicks. These profiles are typically preferred by more experienced players looking for a more attacking style of play.
Stick Compositions
The material a stick is made from has a big impact on how it feels and performs. Wooden sticks provide a soft touch and are ideal for beginners learning the game. Fibreglass offers a balance of control, durability, and power, while carbon sticks deliver maximum power and responsiveness for experienced players.
Junior sticks are generally lighter and more forgiving to help younger players develop their skills, whereas senior sticks are available in a wider range of compositions to suit different playing styles and performance levels.
